Three Main Reasons Why Woodpeckers Peck On Houses?

  1. Food: Woodpeckers feed on insects living in the siding. If the woodpecker is looking for insects, the holes will be small and irregular. You may have to call us to get rid of the underlying insect problem. Woodpeckers eat larvae of carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, and grass bagworms.
  2. Shelter: The woodpecker wants to create a nest or roost hole. If the woodpeckers are creating a nest cavity, the hole will be round and large. April and May is the beginning of breeding season. This is when woodpeckers nesting holes are usually built. If you need to evict woodpeckers from your home, we can do so before or after the nesting season. The inner wall cavity between the home siding and interior drywall makes the perfect nest area for any kind of bird.
  3.  Mating: Many think that woodpeckers make a loud drumming noise when looking for food. Woodpeckers make a satisfying loud noise to claim their territory, this is an attempt to attract a mate. Once the breeding has begun in the spring the drumming noise will stop.

The best way to solve a woodpecker problem is by introducing a deterrent that is stronger than the attraction.

Woodpecker Problems And Control!

Woodpeckers can cause damage to wood and EIFS structures by their pecking and drilling of holes. The drumming of a woodpecker is annoying. Damage to wood cabins and insulated stucco sided buildings are most common. The wood pecker pecks holes into wood siding, fascia and rake boards, and window casing in search of food or a nesting areas.

The Downy Woodpecker seems to cause the most damage around the Miami Valley and both the male and female chip away the wood material to make a nesting cavity together. Both will share the responsibilities of incubating and feeding young so when controlling wood peckers both male and female are usually to blame. Peak breeding season is February to March and approximately 4 eggs incubate for 15 days. Young baby downy woodpeckers get their feathers around 26 days after hatching from the egg.
