Bed Bug Basic Biology 

Over the last few years bed bugs have made a comeback, in the 1940's bed bugs were almost eliminated although the banning of effective but harmful chemicals and increased international travel, bed bugs have made a huge come back. Most commonly found in Hotels and apartment complexes people are vulnerable to these insects due to the sheer number of people coming in and out of them.


Bed bugs have been in the United States since the 17th century and have been a known human parasite for thousands of years.

BED BUG BIOLOGY BASICS

  • Adults bed bugs are flat, reddish brown in color, and about ¼ inch in size, (about the size of an apple seed).
  • 5 – 10 eggs are laid per day by female bed bugs. Bed bugs can lay up to 500 eggs per lifetime.
  • It is possible that over the course of a year30,000 offspring can be laid by a single female bed bug.
  • Within 10-14 days bed bug eggs hatch and within about 35 - 48 days become adults. 
  • Bed bugs most commonly feed on the blood of humans and even some small animals.
  • Bed bugs are nocturnal (hence bed bugs) and on average feed for about 3 -10 minutes while you are sleeping.
  • Bed bugs will feed on exposed skin and often bite in patterns of 3 that leave itchy red welts.
  • The Bed bug life span is about 10 – 12 months but can live months without feeding for 12-18 months.
  • Bed bugs can carry but do not transmit diseases.
